to the fbi about threatening e-mails inadvertently exposed the affair between general petraeus and paula broadwell. meantime a team of fbi agents searched broadwell's home in charlotte, north carolina, overnight, and spent nearly five hours there wrapping up just after 1:00 in the morning. "wall street journal" is reporting that the fbi agent who launched the petraeus investigation himself is under investigation. in part because he sent shirtless pictures of himself to jill kelley. jill kelley, the woman who kicked off all of this investigation, by complaining about the e-mails that she was getting from the petraeus mistress. so the agent, who knew kelley, allegedly sent those pictures before any investigation began, but as you can see, the story is getting much more complicated. we've got team coverage of the breaking news this morning. chris lawrence is at the pentagon. chris, i don't even know where to begin because there's so much to talk about. let's start with general allen. what's the implications of this -- of him being brought in to petraeus scandal and what has he said about it

accomplishments is not what's outstanding. they agree that he simply had to go after the fbi uncovered an affair he was having with a 40-year-old westpoint graduate who wrote a biography on petraeus, which was published earlier this year. >> i can't believe it. but that's what it is. >> reporter: the fbi discovered petraeus' affair with her, while investigating claims from a second woman that broadwell was sending her second e-mails. that second woman has been identified as the 37-year-old woman who was the state department liaison to the military joint specialist command and a friend of petraeus'. >> we received no advanced notice. it was like a lightning bulb. >> reporter: they are the head of the senate committee, intending to hear holdings into why for several months that the fbi commit them in the dark about their investigation. >> this is something that could have had an affect on national security. and i think that we should have been told. >> tonight the friend of petraeus' who allegedly reported the threatening e- mails has been identified as the 37-year-old jill kelly of tampa, florida

in the courtroom today. she'll have a live update on news4 at 5:00. >>> new details coming out about an fbi raid in district heights. an 18-year-old college student was hit by shrapnel after the s.w.a.t. team entered a home this morning. jackie bensen is live on the scene where she talked to someone inside the house about what went down. jackie? >> reporter: well, jim, you can see hours after this happened, fbi agents are still on the scene here in district heights. i spoke to the homeowner earlier, and he said he and his family were sleeping when a full fbi s.w.a.t. team burst through the door about 6:00 a.m. he said everyone woke up and instinctively ran toward the front door. his 18-year-old daughter reached the top of the short landing and when she did, he heard an agent yell, she's got a gun. >> she's standing there with no clothes on, practically no clothes on with nothing in her hand, and they're shooting these big ar-15s at her. you know, and almost hit her. i told her to run back in the room. i said go back in the room and stay there. nobody's in handcuffs, nobody got led away in handcu

focus of an fbi investigation. nbc's andrea michelle first broke the story. she says she has more on the fbi's in -- how the fbi inadvertently found out about the general's affair. >> general david petraeus tumbled from the highest levels of government service after acknowledging what he called unacceptable behavior. an extramarital affair exposed bay cascading series of events that sources say started with a seemingly unrelated complaint to the fbi. triggered by e-mails from petraeus's biography paula broadwell to another woman not related to petraeus who felt she was being harassed and complained to the fbi. officials say in recent weeks, the fbi traced the e-mails to broadwell and only stumbled on the relationship with petraeus as a result. >> it's so politically sensitive that my guess is the decision was made near or at the top level of the fbi to sit down with general petraeus and have a discussion with him and let him know that this information had been discovered. >> broadwell has not been shy about her access to petraeus, co-hosting a barbecue with jon stewart to raise mo

the weekend, we saw voters waiting up to eight hours. the fbi is investigating here in florida. voter intimidation, after dozens of letters wentut to voters, mainly republicans, questioning their eligibility to vote. also in the swing states of ohio and wisconsin, tensions brewing over billboards that went up, alleging voter fraud in mainly minority communities. and phony phone calls in other swing states that went out to predominantly african-american voters, giving them fake information about polls. a lot of this leads to legal challenges in courts that may extend past election day. >> the lawyers out. cecilia, thanks very much. >>> and voting scrambled by hurricane sandy, josh. >> election officials in the storm zone, making sure that voters displaced by the storm are able to cast their boallots today. shuttle buses carrying voters to alternate sites. and people in the hardest-hit areas are being allowed to vote at any polling location in their state. some people in new jersey can also vote by e-mail. although, they have to send in a paper ballot as a backup because of security con
